Summer Home Improvement Projects to Increase Value

Now that summer has officially arrived, it's a perfect time to slap on your work gloves (overalls if you're adventurous) and starting fixing up your humble abode. There are a variety of summer home improvements projects that will increase the value of your home, and this article touches on a few simple things homeowners can do to not only profit, but show pride of ownership.

Landscaping
Warm temperatures and an abundance of sun make summer the perfect time to landscape your home. Plants will take root and thrive in summer, and will have the entire season to put on new growth. Vining plants and ground cover will take off during summer, so it's a good idea to plant them as soon as possible. According to a study by the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, which has now merged to form the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET), “Landscaping can add as much as 14% to the resale value of a building and speed its sale by as much as 6 weeks.”

Refinishing Wood Decks
If your deck is looking like it needs a little help, summer is the time to scrape off old paint, fix any dings/imperfections, then repaint. This is a relatively easy project that most do-it-yourselfers can pull off. Depending on your location, humidity may be a problem, so be sure to keep an eye on your local weather.

Planning for Winter
Summer, especially late summer, is an ideal time to plan for winter. Make sure the exterior of your home is protected from the abrasive weather ahead by fixing peeling paint, inspecting and cleaning gutters, caulking cracks, and other small things that make a big difference.
